DICK GORDON – HIS PLATFORM ON EDUCATION – HIGH TECH GADGETS FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS

Information provided by Sirrom0206 Senator Gordon & the Kindle Project The Kindle Project is an ambitious project but in the long term, it could be one of the best education projects introduced in the PI. If he does charge one or two additional Pesos per text/cell call, recreational cell phone users would off set the set up Kindle cost. The benefits of the Kindle reader: -Provisionally, there would be no need to print textbooks. -Those means no more or lower printing cost per student. -One textbook for all Filipinos thus lowering book development cost. -Education would become equal across the nation. Manila would no longer be the center for advance schooling. -Standardized book lists & tests could be created for all students based on grade level. -The Philippine library system would become digitally connected and act as one large national library regardless of location. -A standardized kindle network would enable out of print Filipino books to live again in a digital environment. -One of a kind Reference Books would no longer be locked away for selected readers. -Transferring students would have little trouble enrolling and fitting into another school on another island. – International Implications -International accreditation would be achievable for any school in the PI. Filipino schools could have sister schools in other nations, enhancing global/cultural understanding. -Students transferring to the USA would have an easier time proving educational qualifications. High-tech Gadgets Hit the Road

It used to be Agent 007 enjoying the sweetest ride on the road. But that was before. Nowadays, each driver is given the opportunity to ride high-tech autos. That fact makes James Bond jealous for sure.

Spectacular auto features are now made available by automakers but they also come with awesome price tags. Nonetheless, these gadgets are worth it. From push-button parking to night vision systems, today’s auto and car features are simply fascinating.

A few years ago, a vehicle could show the driver the location via digital map. The car could take control when it begins to skid. It could also automatically maintain a set of distance from the car in front. However, these auto features are becoming increasingly common. Hence, there has to be something more interesting and useful.

What’s next? How about a car that parks itself? Drivers who are oftentimes faced with parking problems will find the Lexus Intelligent Park Assist system pretty much beneficial. The said feature is available on the Toyota Prius and offered as an option on the redesigned LS models. Essentially, the system enables the driver to pull up to an available parking space by just pressing a button. According to Lexus, the driver only has to apply a little braking pressure.

If you find the Intelligent Park Assist system not that beneficial, you may find a system that keeps an eye on blind spots interesting. According to statistics, many road accidents occur when the driver tries to change lanes without being aware of a vehicle in his “blind spot.” This is the reason why Audi and Volvo formulated their versions of systems that answers this quandary.

Audi’s Side Assist system, launched in the new 2007 Q7 SUV, uses radar to detect other vehicles. Volvo’s Blind Spot Information System, available on the new S80 sedan, uses cameras. The systems are not complicated. It does not need the assistance of Audi rotors or of a Volvo head gasket to function well. It could function just with the rearview mirror. Both systems utilize LED displays near each outside rearview mirror to warn a driver that he should not try to change lanes because a car is in or is rapidly approaching a vehicle’s blind spot.

Another high-tech auto feature is called the sophisticated night vision. BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz introduced updated versions of the Night Vision system, which was initially offered by Cadillac. The systems allow a driver to detect objects and passersby beyond the reach of a vehicle’s headlights. The system uses infrared technology to sense heat from people, animals, stopped vehicles, and other objects up to several hundred feet in front of the car.

The precollision system is also awesome. The system is engineered to detect an impending collision and automatically adopt measures to avoid it. Some automakers use radar to detect and alarm and warning lights to alerts drivers of a possible crash. If the driver did not respond immediately, the system take the necessary steps like applying brakes, shutting windows, adjusting seat positions for maximum air-bag effectiveness, and activating safety-belt pretensioners. Lexus has formulated the Advanced Pre-Collision System (APCS) to avoid “preventable” collisions.

On-the-road entertainment is also booming. Portable audio systems like iPods and MP3 players are now auto compatible. Mercedes-Benz, for one, offers a glove-box-mounted iPod-docking station. It gives power for the iPod and enables the driver to use the car’s steering-wheel to operate it. High Definition (HD) Radio systems and Bluetooth technology are also offered as part of the auto package.

A Linux distribution is also known as the GNU/Linux distribution by some. It is basically a family member of the Unix-like software distributions and these distributions are called “distros”. Linux kernel lies as the basis of these distributions. They contain a number of software applications comprising database applications, media players, spreadsheets and word processors. The Linux operating system consists of the Linux kernel along with a set of utilities and libraries from the GNU and the X Window System for graphic support.

Some Linux distributions may be optimized for size and may not come with X. These use compact alternatives to the GNU utilities, which may include dietlibc, uclibc or busybox. At present, there are more than 300 Linux distributions and many of them are in the active mode. This means that these distributions are being constantly studied, and revised to be improved. The Linux distributions are available in different forms because most of the kernels and supporting packages used are combination of open source and free software. They may take the form of a fully featured desktop or server operating system or can also be used in minimal environments. This is the reason why they are widely used in embedded systems and for things like booting from a floppy disk.

Actually, leaving aside the custom software aspect, the word distribution here simply means a specific assortment of some applications that are installed on top of a set of libraries, along with a version of the kernel. This is created in such a manner that the “out-of-the-box” capabilities are met with most of the requirements of its specific end-user base.

Athletes Look To High-Tech Gadgets To Measure Their Progress

Everything is considered hi-tech these days when it comes to the latest “touch” gadgets on the market. The latest touch gadget is not for people sitting at their desks or while sitting in traffic. This new gadget is for people on the go. This new hi- tech gadget that has athletes’ attention is called a miCoach System, by Samsung and the Adidas corporation. The miCoach System uses sensitive capacitive sensors to measure an athlete’s heart rate, speed, distance and endurance levels.

Similar to a mile tracker for conscientious walkers, this new capacitive sensorsgadget utilizes an acceleration sensor to measure an athlete’s performance.
Created for the athlete in mind, instead of watching one’s performance monitored on an elliptical machine or treadmill at the gym, the miCoach is made up of a couple different components that one wears on their body as a complete set.

A Cell Phone, An MP3 Player and a Website- Heart Monitor in One
The set includes a heart rate belt, a stride sensor that attaches to an athlete’s shoe and a mobile phone with a web based training tool. Together, each component helps to accurately calculate an athlete’s performance, monitor your speed and success and helps you organize upcoming workouts. The inner workings include capacitive sensors that work in part of a 3-axis accelerometer that is able to measure acceleration, motion and inclination. The phone is attached to an armband, but communicates via a headphone to update the user on the progress. The miCoach will tell the user if they need to speed up or slow down depending on the information that was programmed into the system. The website included in the workout tool comes with more that 220 training programs, and fitness plans for weight loss, marathons and target speeds.

The added bonus of the new miCoach is that the phone part of the system is a quality phone with a camera, Bluetooth and obviously web and MP3 capabilities.
For the busy person who always takes their phone with them while they workout anyways, it’s a match made in heaven. Sleek, thin and lightweight- the phone/miCoach system was built for the workout in mind. This idea is the first of its kind, but it does have competition going up against Nike and Apple ipod.

Now athletes can run to the top of the hill while listening to their favorite song, take a picture when they get to the top and call their mother all while tracking their personal best.
